Area record
Senedd records that name a place the gazetteer puts in Bangor Conwy Môn, whoever spoke. Welsh Government’s words are included as the Senedd records them. Listed newest first, never totalled.
Counted by Siambr: places assigned through the ONS Index of Place Names in Great Britain (July 2024) and ONS Output Area lookups. A place name is matched as the gazetteer prints it, case and all. It is placed in a 2026 constituency through the ONS Output Area lookups for the gazetteer's ward, community, built-up area or local authority code. A name the gazetteer gives more than one place, or a place spanning constituencies, is listed as ambiguous, as is a name the Record also prints in lower case or as part of a person's name.

I think that part of it is also about training companies up, companies that possibly have not been involved in larger scale procurement exercises and might have some fear or inhibition about doing so, so working with them in a different context. I'm going to a procurement exercise in north Wales in relation to the Wylfa project. It's the same kind of approach: how to get Welsh SMEs, many of which have never thought of putting themselves forward, just to understand, 'Look, there's nothing to be worried about; it's a process. You've got the skills, you've got the capacity, you can deliver the product, in many cases at lower cost; you've just got to have the confidence to put your name forward.'

In terms of technologies, I think we shouldn't just build a mixed economy with an important element of public ownership, but we need to have a mixed technology approach as well. And certainly, he's right to point to the importance of offshore wind. I think this week, Project Erebus, the first wave of this great potential that we have in floating offshore wind, is holding its community and business stakeholder event. There's a real opportunity there for Welsh businesses to benefit from that first of many projects, a 100 MW project, which is really significant, happening this week. But also, there is another stakeholder event for businesses at Wylfa, being held on Thursday, which I will be attending. There's a very important opportunity there as well in terms of the supply chain for Welsh businesses.
And certainly, at the heart of our work on the national energy strategy is working out what the likely possible contribution of different technologies is. Obviously, we will be basing that analysis on the decision that has already been made in relation to the contract for the three small modular reactors at Wylfa. That will be part of working out what possible contribution will be made in terms of energy generation and how that fits then with the likely energy demand that we are going to be seeing in the course of the period between now and 2040.

It isn't just about the money they haven't spent. It's also about the stupid decisions they've committed to spend on. A few weeks ago, the Isle of Anglesey County Council passed a motion to spend £1.1 million swapping household black bins for smaller ones. Only one councillor voted against that proposal, and I am proud to say that that was a sole Reform Cymru councillor—[Interruption.] There'll be more than one soon. A lonely voice of common sense in a crowded room of nonsense. Let me be clear, of course councils face genuine pressures, from social care to schools, roads and waste collection—these all need funding. We understand that and we want to see them fairly funded, but that does not mean that ever-higher council tax bills should be accepted as the norm. Wales has 22 principal local authorities, so let me ask a straightforward question: do we really need 22 separate back offices when councils could work together to save money? Do we need duplicated payroll systems, separate IT contracts and independent procurement arrangements when sharing services could deliver better value? Could councils combine their purchasing power to secure better prices, reduce duplication and free up money for front-line services, such as social care? This is not an attack on local government employees. They are common-sense questions about the political leadership of Welsh councils.

Gaf i ofyn am ddatganiad gan y Dirprwy Weinidog dros Drafnidiaeth ar gynlluniau Network Rail i gau'r rheilffordd rhwng Caergybi a Chaer am bedair wythnos ym mis Ionawr er mwyn cynnal gwaith atgyweirio ar hyd y llinell? Mae hwn yn rheilffordd y mae miloedd o bobl yn ddibynnol arno, ac felly bydd yr effaith y bydd hyn yn ei chael ar deithwyr ym Mangor Conwy Môn a gogledd Cymru yn sylweddol. Serch hynny, mae nifer fawr o bobl sy'n defnyddio'r gwasanaethau yma yn rheolaidd yn parhau yn anymwybodol o'r tarfu sydd o'u blaenau. Dwi'n falch o weld bod Network Rail erbyn hyn wedi cyhoeddi rhagor o ddeunydd gwybodaeth am y gwaith, ond hoffwn ofyn am ddatganiad gan y Dirprwy Weinidog sy'n gosod allan y gefnogaeth y gall Llywodraeth Cymru ei rhoi rhwng rŵan a mis Ionawr i ledaenu'r gair, fel bod trigolion lleol yn ymwybodol o'r sefyllfa ac yn cael cyfle i baratoi cynlluniau teithio amgen. Diolch.

We will continue to support ports to maximise the opportunities off the coast of the north of Wales and in the Irish sea, at least 7.6 GW with Gwynt y Môr and Mona projects in Welsh seas. Our forthcoming national energy strategy will set out how Wales can secure more clean energy, increase Welsh ownership and retain more economic value within our communities and businesses. Renewable energy will be at the forefront of the national energy strategy, including innovative opportunities such as offshore wind in deeper waters, tidal stream and range, and significant stakeholder input has been collated through activities such as the renewable energy sector deal and offshore wind action plan, to which our major ports have contributed. Much of our offshore and marine renewable energy strategic infrastructure will be located in and around our ports. This will ensure that more of the value created from Wales's natural resources, infrastructure and clean energy transition is retained in Wales, supporting communities, workers and businesses and creating long-term public benefits around the port's hinterlands.

Cyflwynodd Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr Achos Amlinellol Strategol ar gyfer cynnig Caergybi ym mis Hydref 2024. Fodd bynnag, rhoddwyd y gorau i’r gwaith dros dro tra’r oedd y Bwrdd Iechyd yn cynnal ymarfer blaenoriaethu ar gyfer ei raglen datblygu gofal sylfaenol a chymunedol. Ar hyn o bryd mae’r Bwrdd Iechyd wrthi’n diweddaru'r Achos Amlinellol Strategol ac, yn amodol ar gadarnhau’r blaenoriaethu, maent wedi cadarnhau eu bwriad i ailgyflwyno'r cais i Lywodraeth Cymru.

O ran y gadwyn gyflenwi ar gyfer busnesau lleol, bydd swyddogion Llywodraeth Cymru yn chwarae rôl ganolog mewn digwyddiad cyflenwyr Gwyndod—mae'n falch gen i geisio hysbysu hynny yn fwy eang—a fydd yn digwydd dros ddau ddiwrnod yng Ngholeg Menai yn Llangefni ar 22 a 23 Hydref, ochr yn ochr â GBE-N a Rolls-Royce SMR. Felly, mae yna lot mwy yn digwydd, ond dyma ryw fraslun o'r hyn sy'n bosib. Mae'n enghraifft arall, gan fod y penderfyniad wedi cael ei wneud, o sut mae Cymru yn bwysig nid yn unig o ran ynni adnewyddol—ac mae yna lot o gyfleoedd fanna yng ngogledd Cymru—ond ein bod ni hefyd yno ar ddechrau technoleg newydd o ran SMR ym Mhrydain, ac mae Cymru mewn safle arbennig o dda i elwa yn economaidd o hynny am genedlaethau i ddod.

Dwi'n falch o glywed cyfeiriad y Gweinidog at ailddiwydiannu. Dwi'n croesawu hynny. Byddwn hefyd yn eilio pwysigrwydd y diwydiant niwclear i gwblhau hynny. Yr wythnos diwethaf, bues i lawr yn Hinkley Point, pwerdy niwclear sydd wedi ei adeiladu gyda pheth helaeth o ddur Cymreig, ac mae yna gyfle i fynd ymhellach, y tu hwnt i'r prosiect newydd yn Wylfa, o ran ehangu'r diwydiant niwclear yng Nghymru.

Thank you, Minister. Minister, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere causes temperatures on earth to rise, and that isn't good for any of us. And we need to achieve whatever reduction in emissions is necessary to secure the long-term future of mankind. That's why, in its current formulation, net zero is so frustrating. Deindustrialisation and a reliance on China and India are not long-term solutions. Renewables, again, are not a long-term solution, neither is burying our heads in the sand about the economic and geopolitical problems created by net zero. The only long-term solution to the challenges that we face, both as a nation and as a species, is nuclear power. So, I'm excited about the development of small modular reactors at Wylfa. After that, Minister, what's next for nuclear power in Wales?
-
…
I will now move on to the areas on which Reform fundamentally disagrees. First Minister, your Government remains committed to a pathway to net zero by 2040. Reform does not support that devolved target. We put greater weight on affordability, energy security and nuclear power, including the economic opportunity through small modular reactors at Wylfa in north Wales, which did not feature at all in Plaid Cymru's election manifesto. In fact, there's not much talk of north Wales at all in your programme for government, which is extremely disappointing.
…
-
…
Regional engagement remains central to this work, Officials are already working closely with key stakeholders including the North Wales Tertiary Alliance, North Wales Regional Skills Partnership, and developing nuclear skills hub, so that national planning reflects the workforce needs and opportunities associated with Wylfa and its supply chain.
-
…
I will say though that I very much welcome the commitment from the Welsh Government to a third Menai crossing in my own constituency of Bangor Conwy Môn, something that we have campaigned for for a long time. This will be critical to the expansion and new job opportunities at Wylfa, and that is exactly what we need to be replicating across Wales: investment in our transport infrastructure, building a much needed M4 relief road.
…

There are a number of points and they're really valid, and I value the contribution that you've made, and if I can just take them one at a time. When we start in Government, we look at what skills audits have taken place in recent years. The last skills audit took place in 2012. That is 14 years ago, so we don't really know now what the skills needs of Wales are without going out to actually do this exercise and understand what the future needs skills of Wales are. So, that is why we are currently undertaking that skills audit. The main findings of that audit will be made clear in the skills summit that we'll be holding in October. Now, that skills summit will bring together, as I mentioned in the statement, not only FE and training providers, but will also bring together businesses and industry, and I want them to co-design the next steps with us as a Government, because they understand the sector better than us. So, that is an approach that I want to take. Let's understand where the future growth sectors are. And you mentioned Wylfa—absolutely, and I can assure the Member that I've spoken to the chief executive of Coleg Llandrillo Menai, and I can reassure you that they've been looking at the challenges of Wylfa for a number of years and they have a pipeline of young people already on courses to fill those jobs on Ynys Môn. So, that is an example of the kind of approach we want to take.
…
-
…
One thing I was particularly pleased to hear was your commitment to making sure the skills system supports Wales's wider economic ambitions. If that genuinely is the Government's ambition, then surely we need to start preparing now for the opportunities we already know could be on the horizon. Take Wylfa in my constituency, for example. Whether it's new nuclear or small modular reactors, if those projects move forward, they'll require thousands of skilled people—not just engineers, but welders, electricians, project managers, construction workers, technicians and apprentices. Those skills cannot be created overnight. By the time a final investment decision is made, the training pipeline should already be in place.

Ar Ynys Môn, mae'r gefnogaeth yn helpu i gyflwyno prosiectau mewn llefydd fel Caergybi sy'n canolbwyntio ar adfywio, gweithgarwch economaidd a gwella'r arlwy yng nghanol y dre, ochr yn ochr â chynlluniau fel terfynfa forol Amlwch, sy'n gwneud defnydd o safleoedd allweddol unwaith eto ac yn cefnogi swyddi. Mae hyn yn adlewyrchu dull sy'n seiliedig ar leoedd, gan weithio efo partneriaid lleol i ymateb i'r heriau a'r cyfleoedd penodol ymhob ardal, a sicrhau bod gwaith adfywio yn cael ei wreiddio yn anghenion cymunedau lleol. Mae dull o greu canolfannau trefi bywiog defnydd cymysg sy'n diwallu anghenion cymunedau rŵan ac yn y dyfodol yn hollbwysig i'r Llywodraeth yma.

I will finish where I began, on the cobbled streets of Conwy, with the sound of the Menai strait in the air in Porthaethwy and the sight of Penrhyn quarry on the horizon in Bethesda. Our high streets in Bangor Conwy Môn, and across Wales, can once again become centres of economic growth, activity and community life, but we will achieve that not by looking to yesterday's solutions, but by responding to the needs and opportunities of today and tomorrow. Diolch yn fawr.

It was an absolute pleasure to visit Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni last year to see their work as a trauma-informed school, and, indeed, Ynys Môn has the distinction of being a trauma-informed island. I was blown away by my visit to Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni, who are the first and, as far as I'm aware, the only trauma-informed secondary school in the UK—an achievement I was delighted to highlight when I attended the international summit on the teaching profession in March. The programme is underpinned by the importance of strong relationships, and relationships are what it is all about in this space, and also having emotionally available adults to help support young people. One example of what they do in Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni is that all young people are met off the bus in the morning by staff who know them and understand their interests and needs, asking things like, 'How did the rugby go last night? Anything interesting happen to you last night?' The purpose of that is so that those young people know there is always an adult keeping them in mind, and the power of that, especially to a child who doesn't have strong relationships at home, is incalculable. It is exactly about creating that village around the child, and if young people haven't got that at home then we have to look for other mechanisms to do it.
One of the last things I did as a Minister was announce new funding of over £1.6 million for additional mental health and well-being support in schools over the next three years, on top of the around £12 million spent every year in Wales. One of those was for the Anna Freud Centre to develop strategies for safety and well-being for learners in year 5 and year 7, to give them knowledge, skills and understanding about mental health and how to access support, and it's designed to encourage young people to seek help when they need it. But I also announced funding to develop the introduction of trauma-informed practice in schools across Wales, based on the work that I saw in Llangefni, and that funding is going to be channelled through Dysgu. And I would just make a plea to the new Government that I very much hope that those initiatives will continue. I think there is consensus around supporting our young people with strong relational practice, and I hope that, regardless of political differences, we can all agree on that. Diolch yn fawr.

In my constituency of Bangor Conwy Môn, strong transport links are absolutely vital. Our area is one of Wales's—. If Paul Davies was here, he'd argue with me, but he's not. Our area is one of Wales's premier tourism destinations, attracting thousands of visitors from across the United Kingdom and internationally. Tourism supports thousands of jobs and contributes significantly to our local economy. When our transport networks fail, it is not a good look. And when I see the traffic gridlocked along a lot of the A55, to include Menai Bridge, it does make you ask the question. It's just not a good thing, is it, for tourism.

As you know, I've got my meeting next Friday in Llangefni. I've made it cross-party; we've invited the Bangor Conwy MP for Labour and also Llinos Medi, the MP in Ynys Môn, and I've invited all the other MSs, the other five, and county councillors from Anglesey, because I believe that it's time to start working together more collectively. When I was out knocking doors, people were saying, 'Why are you always arguing? Why don't you work together more cohesively?' And where you've got good ideas, I'll work with you, Rhun, and I'll be bringing many good ideas to you, as will other Members, but we've got to be positive.

Finally, let me turn to the subject of energy. Welsh households are being hammered by rising energy bills due to foreign conflicts. This we all know. Where this Government or the previous Government gets this right, you will have our full support, as has been seen with the SMR project at Wylfa, which will power thousands of homes, create jobs and boost energy security in Wales. Yet, Plaid’s answer is once again to put ideology over the people you are meant to serve. In your 74-page manifesto, not once do you mention the word 'nuclear'. Instead of embracing the opportunity in front of you, Plaid prioritise green ideology over affordability and energy security. The US and the world's major superpowers are all forging ahead with their own high-spec SMR projects at historic rates, yet Wales, again, is suffering delay after delay with a Government that only has plans for plans and nothing that can be measured or delivered—no plan for childcare, your flagship policy; no plan for the economy; and no plan for a brighter, more prosperous Wales. So, with that in mind, where does Plaid really stand on the energy issue? Because Reform, to be clear, backs nuclear.

Thank you. First Minister, can you tell us what action your Government is going to take to deal with the repeated chaos as a result of the frequent closure of the Menai suspension bridge? It's causing misery for residents, commuters and businesses across north Wales, and of course that bridge, and the Britannia bridge, serve an island community of 70,000, which you represent, which is home to one of the most strategically important ports in the United Kingdom and will soon be home to a very important nuclear power facility as well. My colleague, Janet Finch-Saunders, has responded to the anger on the ground by taking the lead and organising a public meeting in order that this can be discussed on 12 June in Llangefni so that a long-term resolution can be brought forward. You've previously spoken loudly and clearly in the Senedd in favour of a third Menai crossing. So, now that you're sitting behind the First Minister's desk, can you show some leadership, attend that public meeting on 12 June, look residents in the eye and outline precisely what action your Government is going to take to bring forward that third Menai suspension bridge as soon as possible?
-
I remind the leader of the Labour group that his party used to say that it supported the ordinary working man and woman. My position on Wylfa is very, very clear. This is a reserved matter, and the manifesto coming into this election said that there were matters that were reserved, which absolutely includes Wylfa. We will work positively on that particular plan because of the economic benefits locally that can flow from it—and across the wider region—plus on the elements of the environmental positives associated with it.
-
I'm very grateful to the First Minister for his answer, but can we just have absolute clarity on what the Welsh Government position on small modular reactors now is? I ask because your manifesto failed to reference nuclear energy, failed to provide support for SMRs at Wylfa and, of course, your energy Minister has said that the party, Plaid Cymru, at a national level, must be clear in its opposition to Wylfa B. Does this Plaid minority Government support the building of eight SMRs at Wylfa, which will likely generate more energy than a single gigawatt facility?
-
First Minister, again, we are seeing the terrible impact of rising energy costs across Wales on our citizens, on our businesses and, of course, on our public services. Our dependence on energy from overseas must end, not only because it threatens our national security, but because it also subjects our people to immense global instability. Do you agree that, alongside renewables, the building of as many as eight small modular reactors at Wylfa offers enormous opportunity to provide energy security, lower bills and 8,000 jobs, 3,000 of which will be in your constituency?
