Area record

Senedd records that name a place the gazetteer puts in Gwynedd Maldwyn, whoever spoke. Welsh Government’s words are included as the Senedd records them. Listed newest first, never totalled.

Counted by Siambr: places assigned through the ONS Index of Place Names in Great Britain (July 2024) and ONS Output Area lookups. A place name is matched as the gazetteer prints it, case and all. It is placed in a 2026 constituency through the ONS Output Area lookups for the gazetteer's ward, community, built-up area or local authority code. A name the gazetteer gives more than one place, or a place spanning constituencies, is listed as ambiguous, as is a name the Record also prints in lower case or as part of a person's name.

Government is determined to look at all the options that are for us. The Member mentions swimming lessons; of course, we have a programme that is rolling out swimming lessons to children throughout Wales. We've identified that as something that's important for health, for safety and so on. But the truth of the matter is we don't have a sense of the scale of the problem that we face. The Member references a number of estimates that have been brought forward by local authorities, and I've no reason to doubt those figures at all, but the totals that we're looking at in terms of the gaps in provision are going to be greater than that, aren't they? So, the answers that we need to be putting in place are long-term. The truth is, though, that we need to understand the scale of the problem. There are examples of investments going on right now. Bro Dysynni in Towyn, new all-weather hockey and football pitch, supported by £360,000 of partnership investment between Welsh Government, Sports Wales and partners. Again, in that part of Wales, Byw'n Iach facilities across Gwynedd, seeing investment in improved leisure, fitness and wellbeing facilities, supporting that sort of broader agenda of local participation across all age groups.

The alleged dumping of PCBs, poisonous chemicals that do not break down but build up in the environment, animals, fish and humans over time, are widespread. These chemicals were dumped in 12 known sites across Wales, including in Rhiwabon, Cefn Mawr and the infamous Llwyneinion acid tar lagoon near Rhosllanerchrugog. Evidence gathered by campaigners and experts over years claims that PCBs may have been responsible for spikes in rare cancers in those areas. A local resident, featured in Buried with Michael Sheen, Michael Phillips, revealed that, as children, he and his friends went down to Llwyneinion acid lagoon to watch as fire crews battled to bring a fire there under control in 1980. The fire took 18 hours to extinguish, but, years later, Michael and his friends all contracted rare cancers, which he attributes to exposure to PCBs. And he says, 'My surgeon said, "This is strange, I've never seen this type of cancer before" and he'd had this distinguished career of 40 years', said Phillips. Two of his friends have passed away, with brain cancer and breast cancer. Another is battling brain cancer, while a fourth had all his lymph nodes removed, as they were cancerous. A fifth even had the same type of cancer as Phillips—something his surgeon said was equivalent to the odds of winning the lottery every day for six months.

Yr wythnos diwethaf, cofnodwyd 100 mlynedd ers agor y Stiwt, neu Blas y Mwynwyr, yn Rhosllanerchrugog. Adeiladwyd y Stiwt gan y gymuned i'r gymuned. Rhwng 1924 a 1926, rhoddwyd ceiniog o bob tunnell o lo o’r pyllau lleol tuag at adeiladu'r theatr. Codwyd bron i £18,000, swm anferthol ar y pryd. Parhaodd y glowyr i gyfrannu, gan roi 2c o’u cyflogau wythnosol tuag at y cynnal a chadw. Agorwyd y Stiwt ym 1926, yr un flwyddyn â’r streic gyffredinol. Yng nghanol caledi enfawr ac ansicrwydd, gwnaeth glowyr y Rhos rywbeth anhygoel: lle ar gyfer adloniant, addysg, y gymuned a bywyd diwylliannol Cymreig. Ers cenedlaethau, mae wedi bod yn fynediad at y celfyddydau. Fel y dywedodd Mark Lewis Jones yr wythnos diwethaf, 'Fe ddechreuodd o i gyd yn y Stiwt'.

Mewn ardaloedd eraill ar draws y rhanbarth, dŷn ni'n gweld lle mae gwaith adfywio yn creu canlyniadau cadarnhaol, mewn trefi fel Bethesda a Blaenau Ffestiniog. Mae buddsoddiad wedi cefnogi gwaith adfywio o dan arweiniad y gymuned, lle mae partneriaid lleol wedi perchnogi eiddo canol trefi a'u defnyddio nhw'n llwyddiannus unwaith eto fel busnesau cymunedol a gwasanaethau. Mae hyn yn cynnwys gwaith sy'n digwydd efo sefydliadau fel Cwmni Bro Ffestiniog, Antur Stiniog ym Mlaenau Ffestiniog a Tabernacl (Bethesda) Cyf ym Methesda, lle mae cymorth Llywodraeth Cymru wedi helpu mewn blynyddoedd diweddar i sbarduno gweithgarwch economaidd ehangach ac adfywio dros y tymor hwy.

These names could mean a place in Gwynedd Maldwyn or somewhere else. Siambr does not choose: each name lists every place the gazetteer gives for it.
